ConcreteCanoe.org

Introduction: - Welcome to ConcreteCanoe.org, launched on August 28, 2001 by Team UAH, as their major contribution to the 150th anniversary celebration of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) -- America's oldest national engineering society.

Our goal is to allow people that compete in concrete canoe competitions throughout the world to showcase their efforts.

At the same time, we hope to educate, interest, and involve our visitors in designing, building, and racing these unique crafts.

We expect to make several changes in content and format, mainly in response to user feedback from visitors like you.

We need your input and help to make this project a success.

As this site matures, we want to make it easy for our visitors to find information that they would otherwise have to search long and hard for. Now that we have begun to secure volunteers to work with us, we plan to work hard on information architecture (IA) -- how information is organized on the site.  Our objective is to make ConcreteCanoe.org user friendly, so that when a visitor wants to find concrete canoe information, they come to us as opposed to using their favorite search engine.

We would like to attract additional volunteers willing to compile data bases regarding specifics, with top line menus having items such as Mix Design, Section Design, Hull Design, Paddling, and Fund Raising.  This is not a comprehensive list by any means.  But it gives you an idea of what we have in mind.

The main thing is that when someone comes to ConcreteCanoe.org wanting to learn anything about concrete canoes, we can link them to a location where they obtain key information regarding a desired functional area, say paddling.  When they click paddling on our volunteer’s site, they get a second level menu, such as Strength Training, Endurance Training (or Conditioning), Nutrition, Technique, Sprint Races, Distance Races, etc.

Technically speaking, ConcreteCanoe.org is a portal site with two major inherent difficulties:

  • once a user leaves to go to a site hosted by someone else, they generally have no obvious way back to us.
  • branding problems arise because the graphics, navigation, etc. are inconsistent as a user moves through the links that we provide.

As described below, we have prepared a number of promotional graphics to solve the first problem; and, are currently working on software packages to allow a user to download and install a pop-up window for ConcreteCanoe.org.

We branded our site by using a black background so that users know when they are still aboard.  The main disadvantage of this is that black pages require excessive ink while printing.  However, this should become less and less of a problem as we secure more and more volunteers to keep libraries, data bases, etc. at their locations.

Getting involved:

Suggestions for getting involved as a volunteer in this undertaking are mentioned throughout the site.  A concise list is included on the submission guidelines page.

If you have something to showcase here, please refer to the submission guidelines and contact us.

Let us know what it is and how you think your contribution should be integrated into our site.  We'll post the information and provide a link to you. -- Simple as that!

ConcreteCanoe.org graphics:

Stationary and animated images, such as those shown above and below, can be downloaded and used to promote ConcreteCanoe.org.

By including one or more of these promotional graphic images on your site with a link to www.concretecanoe.org, you will help our contributors get the exposure and recognition that they deserve.

Thank you in advance for your support!
