2010 U.S. National Concrete Canoe Competition  - 23rd Anniversary
San Luis Obispo, California
June 17-19, 2010

From Lean to Green to Racing Machine
in 28 days!

Team UAH was shocked on Friday night when they removed "SUPER CHARGER" and their test cylinders from their molds to find that their concrete had turned from brilliant white to bluish green.

Undaunted after abandoning construction last month due to fatal shootings on campus,  the team decided to integrate the bizarre patches into their design.  Crews have been working round the clock ever since then... to finish the boat in time for the Southeast Conference this weekend.

2010 marks the team's 25th anniversary. The boat was built from start to finish in 28 days!

"It reminds me of the time that Werner Von Braun's rocket  team was faced with a three day deadline prior to launch, said Dr. John Gilbert, Team UAH faculty advisor.  "The team's lead engineer asked Dr. Von Braun how on earth he thought that they could finish in three days.  Von Braun responded, 'We still have three nights too!"  The launch went according to plan."

UAH attributed the effect (called "Greening")  to a complex reaction of the sulfide sulphur contained in their blast furnace slag with other compounds in Portland cement.  "The reaction was enhanced due to a lack of air and inadequate oxidation in the affected areas," said Team UAH.  "It was pronounced in the bow and stern sections where we had placed flotation; and, in thicker regions of the hull located along the gunwale and chine."

When their canoe turned from brilliant white to greenish blue (left), Team UAH began a forensic study (right) to understand why.
"Greening" was the answer.

According to the Slag Cement Association (SCA), "Surface greening occurs in only a small percentage of concrete made with slag cement.  The degree and extent of the coloration depends on the rate of oxidation.  Greening does not affect the concrete performance and generally goes away in about a week."

- CNCCC Distributes Final FAQ -

The Committee on Concrete Canoe Competitions recently distributed a copy of the 2010 NCCC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The information included in the FAQ is a compilation of all the questions posed by the students and the responses given by the CNCCC which have been previously broadcasted to the list server.

Final FAQ - March 2010

This version of the FAQ supersedes the version that was issued in November 2009 (and includes all of the responses that were part of that FAQ).

- Defending Champs at UC Berkeley Liberate Canoe From Stone -

The University of California - Berkeley Bears (5 time national champions including 2009) have come out of hibernation.  They christened their 2010 entry "Ex Calce Liberatus"... a Latin saying meaning "Liberated from Stone."  Ex Calce Liberatus later became known as Excalibur, according to legend. This mythical sword and the legend surrounding it will serve as the team's inspiration this coming year.

Cal won last year's US nationals with "Bear Area."  They continue to follow their tradition of including "Cal" and "Bear" in the names of their entries in alternate years.

- University of Wisconsin-Madison Updates Design Report Page -

a

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers (5 time national champions) modified their concrete canoe web site and we've updated our link to their partition that includes the national design reports.

You may catch some of these guys wearing woolen hats during the winter  months but you'll seldom see their racing team on the water without red bandanas.

- Nevada Reno Launches Concrete Canoe Message Board -

The University of Nevada - Reno (one time national champion) is the latest contributor to ConcreteCanoe.org.  They strengthened our effort to support concrete canoeing worldwide by hosting an on-line discussion and forum via their concrete canoe message board...  and we've added a button on our menu so that you can access it.  Be sure to check this out and join the fun!
